SCAN Animal Rescue Costa Blanca

SCAN Animal Rescue Costa Blanca is an established animal welfare charity in the Costa Blanca.

The organisation was founded in 2009 by a group of local volunteers who were horrified at the condition of abandoned and mistreated animals in the area and realised that something had to be done to help them.

SCAN is a registered charity and operates as a non-profit organisation.

We are committed to helping homeless, neglected, abused, and abandoned animals in our community, regardless of age or species.

We provide care and shelter for these animals until we can find them loving homes, and we work tirelessly to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership and the importance of spay/neuter programmes.

About SCAN Animal Rescue Costa Blanca

Spain’s Costa Blanca is home to the Society for the Care of Animals in Need known as SCAN.  In the last 10 years, the shelter in El Verger has rescued and rehomed more than 3,500 cats and dogs.

Why does SCAN exist?

Unfortunately, Spain has the worst statistics for animal abandonment in Europe. These animals need help: they need a voice to speak on their behalf; they need care, rehabilitation and rehoming.

SCAN is that voice in the Costa Blanca North, protecting the animals that cannot speak for themselves in a specialised Shelter with a team of trained Volunteers.

SCAN rescues animals at risk and rebuilds their trust in people with the ultimate goal of finding loving, forever homes for them.

Scan has a no-kill policy and works closely with dedicated vets to ensure all animals are in optimal health.

What does SCAN do?

At SCAN Animal Rescue Costa Blanca we believe in the:

1) RESCUE of animals in danger

2) CARE for the animals that we rescue

3) REHOMING of all the animals

SCAN takes in distressed cats and dogs, provides shelter for them, nurtures them, arranges necessary medical care for them, and then finds them safe new homes.

SCAN works diligently to educate the public about the importance of animal rights and humane treatment. It conducts workshops and seminars, promotes awareness through its informative website, and actively participates in community events throughout Spain.

SCAN advocates with local Town Halls to help them understand the evolving legislative frameworks.

SCAN educates the next generation with school visits promoting the importance of responsible pet ownership.

SCAN works closely with the other shelters nearby to help them create best-practice care for their animals based on our own Nucleo Zoologico accreditation, knowledge and experience.  A zoological nucleus is any type of establishment dedicated to the collection, reception, training, breeding or sale of animals.  Accreditation verifies legal adherence to the best standards of protection and hygiene of animals.

SCAN has established strong working relationships with Animal Help Espana in Germany, and the Little Black Dog Charity in Guernsey. These charities have the same Ethos as SCAN, dedicated to working tirelessly for Animals.  We make regular trips taking both Cats and Dogs to their new homes and futures with loving Families.

Through these efforts, SCAN is making a difference in the lives of countless animals – and helping to create a more compassionate society overall.  The work, however, is far from done.

To allow us to do this effectively we need to raise money.  If you would like to help us care for animals in need, please consider making a donation today.  To learn more about SCAN or make a donation, please visit SCAN Animal Rescue Costa Blanca
